Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo toured the county on July 19 to assess the progress of key developments, including the construction of Ithookwe Stadium.

Kitui County is making final preparations to host the Mashujaa Day national celebrations for the first time in its history, as the government accelerates a series of ambitious infrastructure projects ahead of the October 20 event.

With just three months to go, Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo toured the county on July 19 to assess the progress of key developments, including the construction of Ithookwe Stadium, which will serve as the main venue for the celebrations.

Dr. Omollo expressed confidence in the stadium's timely completion, noting that it will have the capacity to accommodate up to 10,000 people once finished.

“This is more than just a venue it’s a symbol of national unity and the government's commitment to inclusive development,” he said during his inspection.

Ithookwe Stadium is set to become one of the largest public spaces in the region, with local leaders hailing it as a transformative project that will host sports tournaments, cultural events, and public gatherings well beyond the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The government is also racing to complete two other flagship projects in time for the event: a new mini–State Lodge and upgrades to the Ithookwe Airstrip. The lodge is intended to host senior government officials and dignitaries, while the revamped airstrip will support efficient air travel and improve regional connectivity.

“These developments the stadium, state lodge, and airstrip are not just for one day. They’re part of a long-term strategy to elevate Kitui’s profile and unlock its economic potential,” Omollo said.

He emphasized that hosting Mashujaa Day in Kitui reflects the government’s broader goal of equitable development and regional inclusion.

“No part of this country should feel excluded. Through national celebrations like this, we reaffirm our commitment to unity and ensure that development reaches every corner of Kenya,” he added.

The local economy is expected to receive a major boost from the event, with thousands of guests anticipated to flock to Kitui for the celebrations. Traders, hotel operators, and transport providers are optimistic about the opportunities the event will bring.

This year’s Mashujaa Day will be the first time Kitui hosts a national holiday of such magnitude, marking a historic milestone for the county. The decision is seen as a deliberate move by the government to decentralize national functions and bring them closer to the people.
